Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign

We work to promote the interests of cyclists in the borough. We also organise rides and other social events, cycle maintenance classes and other events.

The Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign has 278 members (2008 figure). Our monthly meetings are generally lively and new members are always welcome to dip their pedal in.

The group organises regular leisure rides around the local countryside, sometimes making forays along the canal into Central London or the Docklands. Among our regular attendees is John Powell from Woodford Green. At 89, John is probably one of the most senior LCC members who continues to work and to cycle commute whenever he can!

In Waltham Forest, Car-Free Day takes place on Saturday rather than on Sunday as elsewhere. The borough's Cycling Officer, Gina Harkell explains this is because it has "more impact on cars. Sunday is a quiet day and much easier to close roads on, but is obviously less effective."

Waltham Forest Council run regular Bicycle Recycling Scheme and maintenance workshops.

Our regular work includes:

- Giving advice on many road schemes to the Council

- Regular reporting of faults on the roads

- Holding a liaison meeting with the Council every 3 months

- Giving cycling input at the Council's Transport Liaison Consultative Group

- Holding information stalls at most of the local fairs and in the market to give cycling advice to the community

- Running monthly touring rides

- Running monthly maintenance and recycling session.

Achievements

Membership : Increased from 150 in 1997 to 278 in 2008

Commuter cycling on Lea Bridge Road: 540 per day in 1993 to 780 in 2002

Cycling has increased by 80% in the 5 years to March 2007 in the borough

We hold a regular monthly meeting at the Hornbeam Centre on Hoe Street.
