Havering has an integrated youth service with a number of different clusters within it. The Youth Support Services includes a specialist LGBT project for 16-19 year olds and a detached youth team while the central support cluster supports the Youth Council and the Youth Opportunity Fund. The Youth Service also runs building based youth clubs, the Duke of Edinborough Award Scheme and holds contracts for the provision of services such as Connexions and teenage pregnancy work.
The Youth Service's objective includes to 'engage and work with those young people who would like to become active citizens, these people young people will then...advocate for and on behalf of other young people. The service will provide a real opportunity for young peoples' voices to be heard by adults in power and those in community positions' (Service Delivery Plan 06/07).
In addition, all Havering youth activities aim to 'enable the young person to feel comfortable with themselves, making and sustaining personal relationships, reaching their potential and finding a place in society which is as satisfying as possible' (www.haveringyouth.co.uk).
London Civic Forum has produced a case study of the Havering Youth Services, highlighting its unique contribution to empowering children and young people across the region. To download this case study, please click here.
