Borough & Bankside Community Council

Community Councils are part of Southwark Council. They were set up to take decision making out of the town hall and put it back into the community. The Community Councils encourage involvement from local people in council decision making and project funding to improve their area.

The public can influence the agenda/content through the Community Matters slot, petitions, deputations, question and answer slots, and public question time as well as direct consultation on key issues and the council's strategic and policy development. At their meetings, community councils cover anything from how to improve street cleaning or bid for new equipment for a play area, to local planning applications and updates on crime issues.

Decisions are made by local councillors from the Cathedral and Chaucer wards, but they are heavily influenced by the opinions expressed at the meetings. There are 2 types of meetings:

  1. Planning meetings where all matters to do with local planning decisions are made.
  2. General meetings where all other decisions are made including environmental improvements, community safety, the appointment of school governors.
